About
Joshua Urquhart is an Australian filmmaker whose work is defined by meticulous craftsmanship, emotional depth, and an enduring commitment to innovative storytelling.
His passion for cinema was shaped early by his grandfather, a filmmaker whose passing solidified Joshua’s own path and ignited the realisation that filmmaking was not just an interest but a calling.
A graduate of JMC Academy, Joshua has since been developing his unique cinematic voice. Over the years, he has cultivated a reputation for an intensely considered creative process. This includes deconstructing narrative structure, exploring psychological nuance, and interrogating every thematic layer before a script ever reaches its first page. His approach extends visually as well—storyboarding with precision, composing each frame of his films before they are made - with purposeful intent.
Joshua’s work is driven by a fascination with non-linear narrative forms and a desire to reimagine genre conventions. He gravitates toward character-driven stories that examine the fragility of the human experience, often through recurring motifs of love, loss and the passage of time.
Having grown up practicing magic, Joshua brings a conjurer’s sensibility to cinema: an endless pursuit of awe, wonder, and emotional astonishment. For him, the magic of moving images lies in their ability to make audiences feel—to witness the impossible, confront the intimate, and experience stories that stay with them long after the screen fades to black.
